One of the top three contributors to the plastic problem is the Philippines. Plastic waste is one of the major problems that we have in the Philippine environment; it causes so many problems especially in our natural resources. In the upcoming years, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish, if it continues at this rate.
Gladly, The Watsons Philippines made collaborations with Plastic Bank in a sustainability program. Together they see a future with less plastic waste and more opportunities for the coastal communities.
Recognizing that the ocean stores a quarter of CO2 from the atmosphere and up to 93.4 percent of heat caused by the greenhouse effect, Watsons is dedicated to decreasing the total impact of its own-brand plastic packaging in order to help conserve the oceans.
Since 2014, the A.S. Watsons Group has prohibited the use of micro plastics in its own rinse-off cosmetics and personal care products. The restrictions have been extended to all brands, meaning that no rinse-off cosmetics or personal care items from any brand will be offered at Watsons.
Now there are four sustainable choices that Watsons offers: Clean Beauty (create products with “unwanted” ingredients), Refill and Reduce (Bottles that can be refilled and reusable containers), better packaging and better ingredients.
The health, wellness and beauty retailer will continue to do what is right by pledging to prevent 50,000 kg of plastic bottles from entering the world's oceans — the equivalent of 2.5 million bottles in the first year.
“At the heart of Look Good, Feel Great is Do Good. Watsons has always been at the forefront of sustainability and this collaboration with Plastic Bank only further reinforces our commitment to helping make this world a better place,” said Viki Encarnacion, Watsons PR and Sustainability Director.
“We are happy to team up with Watsons Philippines – a company that shares our vision on creating a regenerative economy. This collaboration showcases our unified goal of stopping ocean plastic while creating more opportunities for people living in vulnerable coastal communities,” said David Katz, Founder, and CEO of Plastic Bank.
